Abstract
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Problem Behavior Treatment Manual (PBTM), which is based on Applied Behavioral Analysis, by training the special education teacher. 28 special education teachers who participated in the 10 weeks manual training were compared with 29 special education teachers who did not. Special teachers who participated in the manual training answered teacher-report questionnaires before and after the training. In addition, they recorded Developmental Behavior Checklist Monitoring everyday for 10 weeks. Control group also completed the teacher-report questionnaires and re-answered them after 10 weeks. Results showed that the special education teachers who involved in the manual training reported alleviation of their students' noncompliance, as well as improvement in their knowledge of behavioral principles, coping problem behaviors efficacy and burnout. This study indicates not only that the PBTM training for special education teachers leads to alleviation of problem behaviors of the students with DD, but also that teachers possess better psychological adjustment such as confidence in coping with problem behaviors and exhaustions of the teachers. Implications and limitations of current study and direction for future research are further discussed.
